Every good and perfect gift

Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.     James 1:16-18

When king David was consecrating
all the materials donated for the building of the temple of God He prayed to God before the nation gathered:
“O Lord our God, as for all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name,  it comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you.”
1 Chronicles 29:16, NIV

Deuteronomy 8:17-18, NIV
You may say to yourself  ‘My power  and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me’ But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant,  which he swore to your forefathers,  as it is today.

We take so much for granted.  Our speech.  That we can remember and construct coherent sentences.  That we can dream.  Dream big, big things and actually realize what we imagine and theorize.  Can it possibly be we invented ourselves or by some huge luck are here on this planet, this perfect terrarium in outer space just the perfect distance from the sun, the moon and every other planet?

I am confident this is not so and, as the above verses point out, we have a BRILLIANT  Creator who has considered everything, in every detail, to show, reveal, make clear that He is a good, good God.  He allows us the freedom of choice to acknowledge or dismiss Him.  We are permitted the luxury of free will and despite our arrogance He still sustains us with air and water, the blessings of eyesight, hands and feet that do our bidding, the ability to think and love and create and laugh and care for the needy.  Some may say look at all the good mankind has achieved  without God.  Scientists that discover and invent mind  boggling things that even dispute  God exists.  But the Bible is clear, God made man in His image.  The longing for justice, the compassion for the poor and victims, the widows and orphans, the longing to create amazing works of art and music.  For each of you that recognize these things in the respected atheist or non-Christian I celebrate your reverence and affirmation of the image of THE CREATOR in each one.

If God chose to withdraw His goodness where would we be?  All that sustains life gone.  All that is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable and praiseworthy gone.  No more cheery good mornings or words of sympathy or encouragement.  No more beautiful sunsets, rainbows, dreams come true or cause for celebrating.  No more family, best friends, struggles or mountains to conquer.  It would be hell.

O God, Lord of all creation and Giver of life and all that that means, we acknowledge You.  You alone are worthy of all praise.  You grant us life and breath, mind and muscle, arms and heart to hold and embrace those we love.  You give us laughter and tears, victory and struggles that we might gain in determination and overcome to increase in wisdom and discipline and authority.  Because You, the Fount of all that is and has ever been or ever will be, are good and have blessed us to enjoy all you give we honor you and give thanks.
